Social Security Payment Dates — When Your Money Arrives

Social Security pays on a Wednesday decided by the day of the month you were born, so two people in one household are often paid on different days. Enter that day to see every payment date for the year, the date to wait until before calling, and why a spouse follows a different schedule.

Your schedule

A birth date on the 11th–20th of the month is paid on the third Wednesday of the month.

Social Security asks that you allow three extra mailing days past the scheduled date before contacting them. That date is in the last column.

The calendar file is built in your browser from the day you typed. No email address, no account, and the date never leaves this device.

Why two people in one house are paid on different days

A retirement benefit follows the recipient’s own birth date. A spouse or survivor benefit follows the birth date of the worker whose record it is paid on. So a couple born in different parts of the month are paid on different Wednesdays, and a widow may find her payment day moves after her husband dies — because she has moved onto his record. Nothing has gone wrong in either case.

The rule, in Social Security’s own words

  • Birth date on the 1st through the 10th: benefits are paid on the second Wednesday. 11th through 20th: the third Wednesday. 21st through 31st: the fourth Wednesday.
  • If you received Social Security before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and SSI, Social Security is paid on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st.
  • If you do not receive your payment on the expected date, Social Security asks that you allow three additional mailing days before contacting them.
  • A spouse or survivor drawing on another person's record is scheduled by THAT person's birth date, not their own — the commonest reason a household's two payments arrive on different days.
  • SSI is paid on the 1st. When the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSI is paid on the preceding business day, which is why two SSI payments can land in one calendar month and none in the next.

Where to go for more than this page does

🎓 Understand this tool

What it is

The calendar dates your Social Security payments are scheduled for, worked out from the day of the month you were born, plus the date Social Security asks you to wait until before contacting them about one that has not arrived.

How it works

Social Security pays on a Wednesday chosen by birth date: the 1st through the 10th on the second Wednesday, the 11th through the 20th on the third, and the 21st through the 31st on the fourth. Two groups are on a different schedule entirely and are paid on the 3rd — people who began receiving benefits before May 1997, and people who receive SSI as well. All of that is transcribed from the schedule SSA publishes each January.

Getting the most from it

  1. Say whether you are asking about your own benefit or a spouse or survivor benefit. This is the question people get wrong, and it changes the answer.
  2. Enter the day of the month — for a spouse or survivor benefit, the day the WORKER was born, not your own.
  3. Tick the box if you started before May 1997 or also receive SSI, which puts you on the 3rd.
  4. Read the date in the second column before deciding a payment is late. It already includes the three mailing days Social Security asks you to allow.
  5. Download the year to your own calendar if it helps. It is built in your browser and no address is asked for.

Reading your result

The first column is when the payment is scheduled; the second is the day past which Social Security would want to hear from you. A payment that has not arrived on its scheduled date is not yet late.

What it can't tell you

It cannot tell you the amount, only the date, and it cannot see your account. A bank may post a deposit later than the day Social Security released it. And it does not know about a payment held or adjusted for some other reason — only Social Security can tell you that.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the day of the month you were born. A birth date on the 1st through the 10th is paid on the second Wednesday, the 11th through the 20th on the third Wednesday, and the 21st through the 31st on the fourth Wednesday. Enter your day above and this tool prints the actual dates for the year.
